The Way of the Mile High Maverick eBook Stephen Oliver Reviews

Grand Master Oliver really knows his stuff. I highly recommend this book to any martial art school owner. I have followed his advice for years and it has brought myself and my students much success.
Master Jan Lappin
If you own a school pick this book up and read it right away. When it comes to business in the martial arts industry Grand Master Oliver knows what he's talking about
Packed with a lot of great information that if I had from the start would have saved me so much time and money, i'm very happy to have it now though, especially at such a low price considering the quality of content.
An absolute must read for anyone interested in starting a martial arts school or wanting to improve the functioning and/or profitability and/or effectiveness of their current school. Learn how to take your passion for the martial arts and use it to make a positive difference for others while also creating greater freedom for yourself. Grandmaster Oliver knows the industry inside and out and is very clear and effective in conveying what works and what doesn't work for creating a martial arts school that becomes a community leader.
I started reading this book last night and couldn't put it down, and it has my mind doing cartwheels because the stuff he shares in the book is so on point for the juncture we're currently at in the industry. In short, it's chock full of advice that's on point and relevant to the challenges school owners are facing today.

But here's the thing - some people will overlook this book, because they have a preconceived notion of who Stephen Oliver is and what he's about. And, that's a shame, because those people will let their own preconceptions rob them of getting some really great business info on the cheap.

For those of you who think he's just some guy who sells franchises, let me clue you in... back when I was a teenager and training at a pro kickboxing gym in north Denver, Stephen was already running multiple successful schools in the Denver area. (That was over 25 years ago. I wouldn't open my first successful school until six years later.) So, what I'm saying is that he's been at this game, and at a very high level, for a lot longer than most of the people giving advice these days have even been in the martial arts.

So, what do I like about this book? Well, Stephen speaks my language. Although we differ on a few key issues in how to run a school (staffing, mostly - and I think I'm a bit more of a skinflint when it comes to budgeting), we agree on a lot of crucial points. Such as, mindset, attitude, the importance of being a marketing fanatic, the value of community outreach programs, and so on. And, even on the points that we differ on, I know that there's a reason for the way he does things, and you cannot argue with his 25 years of consistent results.

When Stephen says things like, "martial arts without philosophy is just street fighting" or "the gurus who tell you that advertising doesn't work don't know how to make it work" and "the least expensive sale you'll ever make is the second or third sale to the same student" I am mentally nodding my head in agreement. That's because what he says rings true. He speaks the truth about martial arts business - not truths that he derived from interviewing a bunch of successful school owners, or by reading books others wrote - no, he speaks the truth based on what he's learned by running multiple schools for over a quarter-century.

Now, those who know me also know I rarely write stuff like this for people in the industry. That's because there are very few people who I agree with in this industry, and even fewer that I personally respect among the martial arts consulting crowd. So let me make it clear that I get nothing out of writing this. Zip, zilch, nada. I'm not on Stephen's payroll, I'm not an affiliate, and I'm not angling for an appearance in his publications or a speaking gig at his next convention (not my style). But, I do believe that Stephen provides very sound advice, and moreover he has decades of experience in the trenches to back it up, so I have no problems letting others know he's one of the few go-to guys in our industry for school owners who want to get their businesses on track.

So, if you want to get your hands on some very valuable business advice at what I feel is a bargain, pick up this book. And, READ IT. Then, read it again - and make an effort to read between the lines to find the common thread that runs throughout the book. That thread is the key to long-term success in your school. Find it and follow it, and you'll never have to worry about paying your light bill again.
Yes this book has some really good information in it, but honestly it is a huge sales pitch for signing up with NAPMA (The authors company) or becoming a franchisee of the author. The book is just a bunch of short articles. Like I said, a lot of it is good valuable info but I just hate when someone creates a book and it turns out to be nothing more than a big sales pitch.
Great quality content for the martial arts industry in this book. His expertise is always valued most in the industry.
